Emperor Nintoku

explanation: 16th Emperor and a son of Ojin tenno, he is notorious as the owner of a gigantic tumulus (486m long), the biggest in Japan. There exists a controversy among historians about his existence because of a strange similitude between the name of his wife Kaminaga hime and that of his father's, Izuminonaga hime, both coming from Hyuga region. Anyway, his huge tumulus located near the seashore on the south of Osaka should have impressed all the foreign delegations, arriving to Japan.

explanation: The 15th Emperor of Japan. A legend says that he had born from Empress Jingu who would have already pregnant when she had been fighting in Korean peninsula. For that reason, he had been considered a war god and protector of Japan (Hachiman shinko). His tumulus, located in the south of Osaka prefecture is the biggest in Japan in volume. Some see the establishment of a new dynasty from Ojin because of the localization of his tumulus, far from the precedents.

explanation: 45th emperor. Born in 701 from Emperor Monmu and a daughter of Fujiwara no Fuhito. He introduced massively Chinese civilization through Kentoshi missions and constructed many Buddhist temples. After a rebellion of Fujiwara no Hirotsugu in 740, he changed 3 times the capital. Though during his reign, Tenpyo Buddhist art reached the apogee, due to many palace and temple constructions such as Todaiji temple in Nara, the state treasure was exhausted. He died in 756.

explanation: Japanese 10th emperor. Also called "Hatsukunishirasu sumeramikoto" (1er emperor who governed the country), he had extended the territory of Yamato dynasty by sending his generals to 4 directions. He is the first emperor of whom accounts are enough rich on old history books to be credible. According to the theory of "horse ridding people", coming from Korean peninsula through Kyushu, he should be the leader of cavaliers who may have conquered the precedent dynasty.


Emperor Taisho

explanation: Born in 1879 between Emperor Meiji and a court lady, Yanagihara Naruko. His personal name was Yoshihito and educated in a western style university for peers (Gakushuin). He became the 123rd emperor in 1912 and proclaimed his era "Taisho". He was officially enthroned in 1915 at Kyoto but due to his cerebral illness, he was unable to deal with state affairs and his crown prince Hirohito became a regent in 1921. His reign was relatively calm excepting for the world war I. He died in 1926.

explanation: Born in 626 as the eldest son of Emperor Jomei. He carried out a coup d'賡t with Nakatomi no Kamatari to eliminate Soga family in 645 then introduced Taika reform to create a centralized Japan (Ritsuryo regime). He had remained as the crown prince of Emperor Kotoku then Empress Saimei, his mother, but after a disaster of the battle of Hakusukinoe in Korea, he moved the capital to Otsu on the shore of Lake Biwa and became the 38th emperor in 668. He died in 671.

In the letter sent to Chinese emperor in 5th century, Youryaku says that my ancestors have been busy to extend our domain: to the east, we conquered 55 Ainu's countries, to the west, 66 rebellion countries then crossed over the sea to the north to conquer 95 countries. Nihonshoki also says that Himiko should be another name of Jingu but many historians don't agree with this thesis.

explanation: Suiko is the first empress of Japan of whom existence is certified. Born in 554 as a daughter of Soga clan and became the wife of Emperor Kinmei. After the assassination of Emperor Shushun by a killer sent by Soga, Suiko became the 33th emperor. With her nephew and regent, prince Shotoku, she strove to strengthen Yamato dynasty: not only she legislated many laws such as the constitution with 17 articles, but sent several missions to China (Kenzui-shi) to increase Japanese prestige. She died in 628.
